Why Screens Alone Aren't Enough

The PathFinder: Learning on the Ground
One of the flagship programs in our physical AI curriculum centers on the PathFinder — a ground-based autonomous vehicle designed for rough terrain. The PathFinder is built with a unibody chassis, runs up to 11 mph, and is designed to operate in conditions that would challenge most consumer robots: gravel, grass, slopes, uneven pavement. It isn't a toy, and it isn't treated like one in the classroom.
Students working with the PathFinder don't just drive it around — they're responsible for it. They learn how its sensor systems work: how it perceives distance, detects obstacles, interprets camera inputs. They learn to write control logic, which means they need to think carefully about what happens when a sensor reading is ambiguous, or when two commands conflict with each other. They debug. They rebuild. They argue about design decisions with their teammates and have to back up their position with data.
One of the most valuable things the PathFinder program teaches is the connection between AI prompting and physical behavior. When students use prompt engineering to send instructions to the vehicle's AI control layer — telling it to navigate a specific route, avoid a defined obstacle zone, or adjust speed based on terrain — they immediately see how the quality of their prompt affects real-world outcomes. A vague instruction produces erratic behavior. A precise, well-structured instruction produces reliable results. That feedback loop, instant and physical, is one of the most effective ways to teach prompt engineering we've ever found.
The Explorer ROV: Learning Underwater
Not all physical environments are above ground. The Explorer program introduces students to undersea robotics through a custom remotely operated vehicle (ROV) built to operate at depths up to 150 feet. Powered by a Raspberry Pi 5, the Explorer is a serious piece of equipment — compact, maneuverable, camera-equipped, and capable of operating in open water conditions.
Undersea robotics presents a set of challenges that ground-based systems simply don't. Water pressure increases with depth. Communication is limited — no wireless signal passes through seawater, so the tether is everything. Buoyancy has to be precisely managed. Visibility varies dramatically. And because you can't reach in and fix something once the vehicle is submerged, every design decision has to be carefully thought through before the dive.
This is an extraordinary learning environment. Students have to think in three dimensions — not just forward/back/left/right, but up/down and at every angle in between. They learn about fluid dynamics in a way that no textbook diagram can communicate. They learn why materials matter: what happens to a connector joint under 65 PSI of pressure. They learn how to design for an environment you can't fully control and can't fully see.
The Raspberry Pi 5 at the core of the Explorer means students are also working with real embedded computing. They write code that runs on actual hardware, interfaces with sensors, processes video, and makes control decisions. This is mechatronics — the integration of mechanical engineering, electronics, and software — and it's one of the most in-demand skill sets in the modern engineering workforce.

"The vehicle has to be in the water in 30 minutes" is a different kind of pressure than a class deadline, and it produces a different kind of collaboration. They also learn intellectual resilience. Every physical AI program has a moment — usually more than one — where something doesn't work and nobody immediately knows why. The vehicle won't turn left. The ROV is listing. The sensor is giving readings that don't make sense. Working through those moments — staying calm, being systematic, testing hypotheses one at a time — is a skill that matters in every technical career and in most of life. You can't simulate that kind of problem in a worksheet. You can only develop it by actually solving hard problems.
Systems Thinking: The Skill That Ties It All Together
Perhaps the most important thing robotics education develops is systems thinking — the ability to understand how individual components interact to produce overall system behavior, and how changing one part affects everything else.
A ground vehicle is a system. The motor drives the wheels, the wheels interact with the terrain, the terrain data feeds back to the sensors, the sensors inform the AI, the AI updates the motor commands. Change the terrain, and every other part of the system has to adapt. Upgrade the motor, and you might need to recalibrate the control system. Add a new sensor, and you need to figure out how it fits into the data flow.
Students who have built and debugged physical systems develop an intuition for this kind of thinking that takes years to develop through traditional classroom instruction. They start asking "how does this affect that?" almost automatically. They think about second-order consequences. They design with failure modes in mind instead of assuming everything will work as planned.
This is the thinking style that distinguishes great engineers from average ones. It's also — not coincidentally — exactly the thinking style that makes someone an effective AI practitioner. Understanding how an AI system behaves when its inputs change, how prompt changes cascade into output changes, how a well-engineered AI system handles edge cases — all of that comes more naturally to students who have spent time working with complex physical systems.
The Future Is Physical
The robotics market is growing fast. According to Grand View Research, the global robotics market is projected to reach $218 billion by 2030, with physical AI — robots that operate autonomously or semi-autonomously in real-world environments — driving a significant share of that growth. The sectors expanding fastest include defense, agriculture, maritime, logistics, and healthcare. Every one of those sectors needs engineers and technologists who understand not just how to code, but how AI behaves in the physical world.
San Diego is already a hub for defense technology, biotech, and maritime industries. The students coming through our robotics programs here aren't just learning cool skills — they're preparing for careers in industries that are actively hiring, right in their own backyard.
